Earth Warriors

I dreamt about the Earth Warriors, again, last night.

I sometimes have dreams that are not ‘recurring’, in the sense that the same events and actions take place, but rather ‘episodic’, in that they take place in the same world, with the same characters. They do not necessarily follow-on from each other. They’re more like the Simpsons, where previous actions don’t matter so much, and the world resets each time.

The Earth Warriors are women made of nature. Each one has a unique ‘medium’. Some are made of bark and foliage, others of soil or sand. I have met one that is made of a flush of wood ear mushrooms. They are always women, and are always ‘powered’ by a jagged piece of ruby.

The lead-up is always the same - they have been sent to extinguish humans. Humans have proven beyond a doubt that they are antithetical to the harmony of the rest of the world, and must be eliminated. Sometimes, I am just a human that is close when one of the Earth Warriors awakens. An unfortunate casualty in a war. But, last night, I was a hunter of them.

I had had word that an Earth Warrior was awakening somewhere in the vicinity. We (that is me and my partner) tracked her down to a bank near a stream. She was made of a golden clay, and had almost finished coalescing when we found her. My partner held her under the stream until she had dissolved down to her ruby. I just watched, powerless.

We are meant to take the rubies back to a vault, where they are kept individually and away from all soil, wood, water, etc. This was to keep the warriors from re-coalescing. Seeing the warrior’s face get slowly washed away burned itself into my mind, and I knew something had to be done.

When we got back to the vaults, my partner opened an empty vault to deposit the ruby. These were cavernous vaults, made of brushed steel. All to house just one, palm-sized ruby. Once my partner had gone through biometrics to open the vault and deposit the crystal, I swiped his satchel (with the golden clay ruby inside), and shoved him inside. His face, as I pushed the door closed was the antithesis of the clay woman. Hate and tautness, as opposed to shock and slackness. I locked the door. I collected all the other rubies at the facility and hid them in the satchel. There were about 60 or 70, at this facility.

I walked back past security, and exited the facility. I dumped the rubies into the nearest river I found. Women made of water, clay, sand, and silt started coalescing in front of me. I waited, expecting to be exalted for my efforts in bringing them back. Instead, they tore me limb from limb.

For hours after waking, I couldn't get the image of the dissolving woman out of my head.
